"Aiki - a path so difficult to comprehend,
yet as simple as the flow of heaven."
- Morihei Ueshiba |
There are many different descriptions of Aikido on
the web, and in the many books written about it, therefore we will endeavor
to keep ours brief. It
is a martial art founded in the early
1900's by Morihei Ueshiba, respectfully referred to as "O
Sensei". Based on the universal creative principal of Ki, Aikido
("the way of harmony with ki") utilizes the oncoming force of
an attacker, harmonizing with it, to dissipate the attack and immobilize
the attacker regardless of their size and number. The purpose of Aikido is not to perfect a particular skill
or technique, but to harmonize oneself with the flow of nature. Aikido
is expressed in "soft" circular motion, much the same as a tornado, the centre
being soft and stable whilst the outside is hard and strong throwing
away everything that touches it. Although
Aikido movements are as soft and smooth as nature, by applying a little
force, it can become "hard" and devastating. The soft gentle
qualities of Aikido make it appealing to people of all ages. In fact,
Aikido can be enjoyed by all - men and women (young or old), and
children. It not only offers spiritual development, but also provides
exercise and teaches formal etiquette.

"Aiki
can never be encompassed by the brush, or by
the mouth. Do not rely upon words to grasp it, attain
elightenment through practice."
